Tarapith Mahashmashan & Bamakhepa Samadhi

The Mahashmashan (great cremation ground) of Tarapith, situated on the banks of the Dwarka river, is considered one of the holiest and most powerful Tantric sites in India. Unlike ordinary cremation grounds, it is regarded as the sacred abode of Maa Tara herself, who is believed to appear here, and it has drawn Tantric sadhaks (spiritual practitioners) for centuries seeking siddhi (spiritual attainment). This is where the great saint Bamakhepa (1837–1911), the 'mad saint of Tarapith', performed his legendary sadhana. Born as Bamacharan Chattopadhyay in the nearby village of Atla, Bamakhepa dedicated his entire life to Maa Tara, whom he worshipped as his own mother. Countless miracles are attributed to him, and it is said that Maa Tara appeared before him in physical form. His famous saying was that the Mother's worship needs only devotion, not rituals. Bamakhepa's samadhi (resting shrine) stands within the cremation ground and is visited by nearly every pilgrim who comes to Tarapith. The atmosphere of the Mahashmashan — with its banyan trees, sadhus, sacred fires and the flowing Dwarka river — offers a rare glimpse into the living Tantric tradition of Bengal. A visit to Tarapith is considered incomplete without paying respects at Bamakhepa's samadhi.
