Surul Rajbari & Terracotta Temples, near Santiniketan

Surul, an old zamindari village just 4 km from Santiniketan, preserves one of the most atmospheric heritage precincts of Birbhum. The Sarkar family of Surul rose to wealth in the late 18th century through trade with the East India Company — their ancestor Srinibas Sarkar prospered in the silk and indigo business — and built the sprawling Surul Rajbari with its courtyards, thakurdalan (worship hall) and family temples. The glory of Surul is its terracotta temples. The great Shiva temple beside the Rajbari, built in the classic Bengal style, carries some of the finest terracotta panels in the district — vivid scenes of the Ramayana battles, Krishna-lila, Durga, ships and European soldiers, merchants and social life of the 18th century, all carved in fired clay with astonishing liveliness. Two smaller temples in the complex add further panels for the terracotta lover. The Rajbari's grand Durga Puja, celebrated in the old thakurdalan for over two centuries with traditional rituals, draws visitors every autumn and has been filmed many times for its old-world atmosphere. Surul also holds a special place in history: at Surul Kuthi, Rabindranath Tagore's son Rathindranath and Leonard Elmhirst founded the Institute of Rural Reconstruction in 1922 — later named Sriniketan — pioneering rural development, crafts and cooperative work that continues today. A short toto ride from Santiniketan, Surul rewards visitors with terracotta art and living heritage away from the crowds.
