Shantipur & Fulia – Handloom and Vaishnava Heritage

Shantipur, on the Bhagirathi in southern Nadia, is a town where devotion and weaving have been intertwined for five centuries. It was the home of Advaita Acharya (1434–1559), the elder associate of Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu whose prayers, tradition says, called the Lord to descend — making Shantipur one of the founding seats of Gaudiya Vaishnavism. The historic Goswami houses descended from Advaita's line — including the Boro Goswami Bari with its atchala temple — still worship deities dating back centuries. Shantipur's Rash Utsav is among the most famous festivals of Bengal: for three days the town explodes with processions of exquisitely dressed deities ('bigrahas') from the Goswami houses, fairs and lakhs of visitors — a tradition running for over 400 years, so renowned that 'Shantipurer Rash' is proverbial. The town's second fame is its handloom. Shantipuri sarees — fine cotton with elegant borders — have been prized since the Mughal era and were exported across India and beyond; the weaving tradition here is one of the oldest continuing textile crafts of Bengal. Neighbouring Fulia, resettled by master weavers from Tangail after Partition, produces the celebrated Fulia-Tangail sarees and jamdani work. Visitors can watch weavers at their looms and buy directly from cooperatives at prices far below city showrooms. Fulia is also the birthplace of Krittibas Ojha, the 15th-century poet who first rendered the Ramayana into Bengali — the 'Krittibasi Ramayan' that every Bengali household has known for generations; a memorial and library mark his homestead. Together Shantipur and Fulia offer a day of temples, festivals, poetry and the click of looms.
