Santiniketan (Visva-Bharati)

Santiniketan, the 'Abode of Peace', is world-famous as the home of Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore and his Visva-Bharati University. In 2023 it was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site — the first living university in the world to receive this honour. The story began in 1863 when Maharshi Debendranath Tagore, Rabindranath's father, established an ashram and meditation centre here. In 1901, Rabindranath Tagore started an experimental open-air school with just five students, which grew into Visva-Bharati University in 1921 — founded on the ideal of 'Yatra Visvam Bhavatyekanidam' (where the whole world meets in a single nest). Classes are still famously held under the open sky beneath ancient trees. Key attractions include the Uttarayan Complex (Tagore's residences and museum), the Upasana Griha (a stunning Belgian-glass prayer hall), Kala Bhavana with its celebrated murals and sculptures by masters like Nandalal Bose and Ramkinkar Baij, Chhatimtala, and the Amar Kutir handicrafts centre. The famous Poush Mela (December) and Basanta Utsav (Holi festival of colours) draw visitors from across the world. Nearby attractions include the Kopai river, Khoai Sonajhuri forest with its Saturday haat (rural craft market), and the Ballavpur Deer Park.
