Nanoor – Chandidas Dham & Basuli Temple

Nanoor, a historic village in the south of Birbhum, is revered as the birthplace of Chandidas — the great 14th-century poet of the Vaishnava Padavali tradition, whose immortal line 'Sabar upore manush satya, tahar upore nai' ('Man is above all, there is nothing above him') is one of the earliest and boldest declarations of humanism in Indian literature. His lyrics on the divine love of Radha and Krishna profoundly influenced Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu himself and shaped Bengali devotional poetry for centuries. The heart of Nanoor is the temple of Devi Basuli (Bishalakshi), the goddess whom Chandidas served as a priest. Tradition tells of the poet's love for Rami, a washerwoman — a love that defied the social barriers of his age and became inseparable from his poetry of divine love. The Basuli temple complex, with its cluster of shrines, remains an active centre of worship where the poet's memory is kept alive. The temple mound at Nanoor is also an archaeological site: excavations have revealed ancient structures and artefacts suggesting settlement going back many centuries, and the complex contains a group of old terracotta-adorned temples. Every year a mela and cultural festival in Chandidas's memory draws poets, singers and kirtan performers. Combined with Kirnahar nearby, Nanoor makes a rewarding half-day trip from Tarapith through the rice-field countryside for anyone drawn to Bengal's literary and spiritual roots.
