Massanjore Dam

Massanjore Dam, also known as Canada Dam, is a scenic picnic and sightseeing destination built across the Mayurakshi river in Dumka district of Jharkhand, close to the Birbhum border. The dam was constructed in 1955 with financial and technical assistance from Canada under the Colombo Plan — which is how it earned the name 'Canada Dam'. The dam is about 2,170 feet long and rises around 155 feet above the riverbed, creating a vast reservoir surrounded by forested hills of the Chotanagpur plateau. It supplies irrigation water to large parts of Birbhum and Murshidabad districts and also generates hydroelectric power. For visitors, Massanjore offers breathtaking views, especially during and after the monsoon when the lock gates are opened and water gushes out in dramatic force. The blue reservoir against the backdrop of green hills, boating facilities, and beautiful sunset views make it the most popular natural getaway from Tarapith. There are viewpoints on both ends of the dam, and the drive itself through hilly, forested terrain is delightful.
