Mama Bhagne Pahar, Dubrajpur

Mama Bhagne Pahar at Dubrajpur is a fascinating natural rock formation — a sprawling landscape of massive granite boulders balanced dramatically upon one another, formed millions of years ago. The name comes from the two most famous rocks, where a huge boulder rests atop another like an uncle ('Mama') carrying his nephew ('Bhagne') on his shoulders. Local legend connects the rocks to the Ramayana: it is said that when Lord Rama needed stones to build the bridge to Lanka, the gods were carrying rocks southward, and some fell here at Dubrajpur. Another folk tale attributes the scattered boulders to Lord Vishwakarma, the divine architect, who was tasked with building a second Kashi here in a single night but left the work unfinished. At the base of the hillocks stands the temple of Pahareshwar (Lord Shiva as the lord of the rocks), where devotees offer worship. The site gained cinematic fame when the legendary filmmaker Satyajit Ray shot scenes of his classic 'Goopy Gyne Bagha Byne' (1969) among these very rocks. The surreal beauty of the balancing boulders, especially at sunrise and sunset, makes it a unique geological and cultural attraction in Birbhum.
