Hetampur Rajbari & Terracotta Temples

Hetampur, near Dubrajpur in Birbhum, is a heritage village built around the palaces of the Hetampur Raj — a zamindari family that rose in the 18th–19th centuries and became celebrated patrons of education and temple art. The family traces its fortunes to Radhanath Chakraborty, whose descendants received the title of Raja from the British and built one of the most flamboyant palace complexes in rural Bengal. The showpiece is the Hetampur Rajbari, known as the 'Hazarduari of Birbhum' — a vast palace said to have a thousand doors and windows, with a facade mixing European classical columns, arches and stucco ornament. Portions of the palace now house educational institutions founded by the Raj family, including Krishnachandra College established in the 19th century. Film lovers know the Rajbari as a shooting location for acclaimed Bengali films. Hetampur is equally famous for its terracotta temples. The Chandranath Shiva temple and the cluster of family temples display fine terracotta panels — including the curious and much-photographed panel depicting Queen Victoria, a unique example of colonial imagery in Bengal temple art. The village's Gouranga temple and rasmancha add to the heritage walk. A visit to Hetampur pairs naturally with Mama Bhagne Pahar at Dubrajpur just a few kilometres away, making a fine heritage-and-nature day trip from Tarapith.
