Fullara Devi Temple (Attahas Shakti Peetha), Labhpur

The Fullara Devi Temple at Labhpur is identified with the Attahas Shakti Peetha, one of the 51 sacred seats of the Divine Mother. It is believed that the lower lip of Goddess Sati fell here. 'Attahas' means 'loud laughter' — legend says the spot echoes the cosmic laughter of the goddess. The presiding deity is Maa Fullara and her Bhairava is Vishvesh. The temple complex is surrounded by serene ponds and ancient trees, and next to the shrine lies a large sacred water tank. According to local belief, the great epic connection of this place goes back to the Ramayana era — it is said that Goddess Sita spent time here, and a large stone slab nearby is described as the resting place of Hanuman. Labhpur is also famous as the birthplace of the legendary Bengali novelist Tarashankar Bandyopadhyay, whose writings immortalised the red-soil landscape of Birbhum. The temple holds a major fair during Maghi Purnima (January–February) when thousands of devotees gather. The drive from Tarapith through the rural Birbhum countryside is an experience in itself.
