Bethuadahari Wildlife Sanctuary, Nadia

Bethuadahari Wildlife Sanctuary, beside NH-12 in central Nadia, is a green island of protected forest in the Gangetic plain — established in 1980 to preserve a representative patch of the region's original vegetation and its wildlife. Compact (about 67 hectares) but remarkably rich, it is the most accessible forest experience in this part of Bengal. The sanctuary is best known for its thriving population of spotted deer (chital), which visitors regularly see in herds along the walking trails. Its star resident, however, is the gharial — the critically endangered fish-eating crocodile of Indian rivers — bred and conserved here in a dedicated enclosure as part of recovery efforts. Indian rock pythons, monitor lizards, porcupines, jungle cats, civets and jackals also inhabit the forest. Bethuadahari is a delight for birdwatchers: over a hundred species have been recorded, including parakeets, barbets, owls, woodpeckers, orioles and, in winter, migratory visitors to its water bodies. Tall trees draped with creepers, bamboo groves and medicinal plants give the walk a deep-forest feel despite the sanctuary's modest size. Well-laid paths, watchtowers, an interpretation centre and picnic facilities (outside the core area) make it family-friendly. Falling conveniently on the road between Krishnanagar and Palashi, Bethuadahari makes a refreshing nature stop on any Nadia–Murshidabad itinerary from Tarapith, especially from November to February when the forest and birdlife are at their best.
