Ballavpur Wildlife Sanctuary (Deer Park), Santiniketan

Ballavpur Wildlife Sanctuary, popularly known as the Deer Park, lies just 3 km from Santiniketan on the fringe of the Khoai. It was established in 1977, closely linked to the environmental vision of Santiniketan — the land, once barren eroded khoai, was regenerated with forest as part of the afforestation tradition that Rabindranath Tagore himself began with his 'Briksharopan' (tree-planting) festival. Spread over about 200 hectares of dry deciduous forest, the sanctuary shelters a large population of spotted deer (chital) and blackbuck, which can be seen grazing in herds through the sal and sonajhuri woodland. Jackals, foxes, monitor lizards and jungle cats also inhabit the forest. The sanctuary's three ponds ('jheels') make it a rewarding birding destination, especially in winter (November–February), when migratory waterfowl — lesser whistling ducks, cotton pygmy geese, herons, egrets, kingfishers and many more — gather in large numbers. A watchtower beside the wetland lets visitors observe deer and birds at close range. Quiet forest trails, cycling paths and the adjacent Ballavpur Danga tribal village (known for craft workshops and homestays) make the Deer Park an easy, refreshing nature break within the Santiniketan circuit, typically visited along with the Khoai and Sonajhuri Haat.
