Amar Kutir & Srijani Shilpagram, Santiniketan

Amar Kutir, on the bank of the Kopai river near Santiniketan, is a name written into both the freedom struggle and the craft heritage of Bengal. It began in the 1920s as an ashram founded by Sushen Mukhopadhyay, which sheltered revolutionaries and freedom fighters evading British police. After independence-era reorganisation, in 1978 it became the Amar Kutir Society for Rural Development — a cooperative dedicated to reviving the folk crafts of Birbhum and giving village artisans a fair livelihood. Today Amar Kutir is one of Bengal's most famous craft institutions. Its workshops and showroom are renowned for leather craft — embossed and batik-dyed bags that are almost a signature souvenir of Santiniketan — along with kantha embroidery, batik fabrics, terracotta, bamboo work and handloom. Visitors can watch artisans at work and buy directly from the cooperative. Nearby, Srijani Shilpagram, developed by the Eastern Zonal Cultural Centre, is a beautifully landscaped crafts village that showcases the folk culture of eastern India. Full-scale traditional village huts of West Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha, Assam, Sikkim and the Andamans — each decorated with authentic murals, relief work and household art — stand in a single campus, alongside sculpture, galleries and open-air stages where folk performances and craft fairs are held. Together the two make a perfect craft-and-culture stop on the Santiniketan circuit, especially loved by visitors looking to take home the authentic handicrafts of Birbhum.
